Pastoral and agro-pastoral communities in dryland regions are facing growing pressure from climate change, land degradation, and changing land use. In Tiaty in Baringo County, Kenya, these pressures are transforming how people use land, raise livestock, and organize their livelihoods.
In a study published in the KeAi journal Risk Sciences , researchers from Dedan Kimathi University of Technology examined how climate variability and land-use dynamics are influencing pastoral and agro-pastoral adaptation in Tiaty. The team combined Landsat satellite imagery, climate records, agroecological data, livestock market information, population data, and socioeconomic surveys to understand long-term changes in the local landscape and livelihood systems.
The study found that Tiaty’s landscape has been reorganizing from dense shrubland and exposed land toward more mixed shrub, grassland, and cultivated areas. These land-cover shifts coincided with changing rainfall patterns, increasing heat-related stress, and adjustments in farming and grazing practices. The researchers also observed that cultivation has expanded mainly in agroecological zones with better agricultural potential, suggesting that communities are adapting selectively rather than converting land uniformly.
Livestock patterns also reflect this adaptation. Goats, sheep, and camels were more closely associated with shrub- and grass-dominated landscapes than cattle, indicating that households are increasingly relying on species better suited to dry and variable conditions. Cattle-based systems appeared more sensitive to changes in forage and water availability.
Settlement patterns showed further evidence of adaptation. Earlier clustering around services and markets has gradually shifted toward more dispersed settlement arrangements, reflecting mobility, land-use change, and risk-spreading strategies in response to climate uncertainty.
The authors emphasize that these changes should not be interpreted simply as linear land degradation. Instead, they show an ongoing process of autonomous and incremental adaptation to climate stress. However, the study also warns that short-term resilience may create trade-offs, including increased pressure on water resources and ecological risks in shrub-dominated landscapes.
The findings support targeted adaptation measures, including drought-tolerant crops, climate-resilient livestock species, improved veterinary services, community-managed water solutions, early warning systems, and stronger local rangeland governance. Integrated planning will be essential to balance crop production, livestock movement, ecosystem conservation, and long-term livelihood sustainability.
