According to an analysis of nearly 46,000 regional first-detection records of more than 16,000 alien species spanning the years 1500-2005, the proportion of emerging alien species that had not been previously recorded as alien elsewhere in the world remains substantial, despite increases in the total number of alien species recorded, suggesting that access to pools of potential new alien species has increased over time.
