Keren Zhou, Assistant Professor, Computer Science, College of Engineering and Computing (CEC); Xiaokuan Zhang, Assistant Professor, Computer Science, CEC; Binqian Yin, Professor, Computer Science, CEC, and Songqing Chen, Professor, IEEE Fellow, Computer Science, CEC, received funding for the project: “POSE: Phase I: Tile-Debugger: Enabling Accessible, Flexible, and Insightful Debugging for AI Workloads on Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and Accelerators.”

The researchers are developing an Open Source Ecosystem.

The proposed OSE for TileDebugger will advance the development of AI systems from three key dimensions:

lowering barriers to tile-based programming models: They will expand TileDebugger’s user community to ease the early prototype of AI algorithms for developers and researchers who do not have access to high-end GPU hardware, by simulating and analyzing accelerator behavior on CPUs and offering an interactive 3D tensor visualization engine;

enabling distributed development: By establishing a community-driven OSE, they aim to enable hardware vendors and programming language developers to collaboratively support TileDebugger through clear and sustainable interfaces that allow seamless integration of their frontends or backends into TileDebugger; and

accelerating the development of powerful analysis tools: By sharing and improving custom analysis tools (e.g., vulnerability detection) built using TileDebugger within the community, the OSE will further drive innovation to meet diverse AI research and industrial demands.

The researchers received $300,000 from the National Science Foundation for this project. Funding began in July 2026 and will end in late June 2027.
