The winning work of the Bial Award in Biomedicine 2025 , selected from 58 nominations across 18 countries, will be announced at the Award Ceremony on February 24 , 2026, at 6 pm, in Porto, and will be held in a hybrid format, allowing everyone to watch online.
With the amount of 350,000 Euros , this award, promoted by the Bial Foundation , seeks to recognise a work published in the broad biomedical field within the last 10 years, the results of which are considered of exceptional quality and scientific relevance .
Chaired once again by Ralph Adolphs, Professor of Psychology, Neuroscience and Biology at Caltech (California Institute of Technology), the Jury includes more 12 members designated by the European Research Council, Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities, European Medical Association, Scientific Board of the Bial Foundation, previous winners of the Bial Award and editors of the British Medical Journal and the New England Journal of Medicine.
Created to distinguish the most remarkable scientific discoveries in the biomedical field , the Bial Award in Biomedicine takes place biannually, in odd years, alternating with the Prémio Bial de Medicina Clínica. It has the support of the President of the Portuguese Republic, the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities and the European Medical Association.
Previous editions have recognised research work that would later be honoured with some of the most prestigious international scientific awards . It is worth noting that two of the scientists who won the Bial Award in Biomedicine 2021, Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman, were subsequently distinguished with the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries that enabled the development of effective mRNA-based vaccines to prevent COVID‑19.
