The European Hematology Association , one of the leading professional bodies in the field of haematology worldwide, will honour Dr Josep Maria Ribera during its 2026 Congress in Stockholm. Dr Ribera will receive the EHA Clinical Excellence Award in recognition of a distinguished career that has helped shape modern approaches in Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) and, above all, has contributed to improving outcomes for patients affected by this disease.
The award will be formally presented on 11 June during the opening ceremony of the EHA Congress 2026, one of the most important international meetings in the field of haematology.
The EHA Clinical Excellence Award celebrates haematologists whose work has set new standards in clinical practice and patient care. This honour recognises individuals who combine medical expertise with innovation in diagnosis and treatment, leading to measurable improvements in patient outcomes and influencing clinical practice worldwide.
Dr Ribera is recognised for his leadership of national and international cooperative groups focused on ALL, which have played a key role in advancing treatment strategies and improving standards of care. The EHA also highlights that Dr Ribera’s work has “significantly advanced diagnostic and treatment protocols for haematologic malignancies, shaping the field of haematology and improving patient outcomes worldwide”.
Beyond his scientific and clinical contributions, Dr Ribera is also widely recognised for his extensive work in academic mentorship. Over the years, he has trained and supported numerous haematologists, many of whom now hold leading positions in the field.
Dr Ribera has expressed his gratitude for the distinction, describing it “both an honour and a source of great satisfaction”. He adds: “I have been fortunate to spend many years working on the treatment of a serious disease such as acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, and I have also been fortunate to play a part in the major advances that have been made in recent years. In fact, this recognition is shared with a number of outstanding professionals with whom I have had the privilege of collaborating over the years. This recognition belongs to them as well.”
Since 2018, the EHA Clinical Excellence Award has been bestowed upon internationally recognised specialists for their invaluable contributions to the field of haematology. This year’s distinction highlights the impact of Dr Ribera’s career in ALL and reflects the role of researchers at the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute in advancing knowledge and bringing meaningful improvements in the lives of patients with blood cancers.
