Paleolithic "fireside" art may have been engraved on stone plaquettes near hearths to appear to move and flicker in the firelight

Researchers discovered ancient plaquettes depicting net-based fishing methods in the Magdalenian site of Gönnersdorf, Germany. The findings provide insights into Upper Paleolithic fishing practices not previously known.

A new methodology uses photogrammetry and microtopographic analysis to analyze fine engravings in Late Paleolithic portable art, improving the reliability of archaeological interpretations. The technique provides a detailed characterization of groove morphology and variations in depth and width.

Researchers analyze stone tool technologies, revealing a coastal route from East Asia to the Americas around 20,000 years ago. The findings provide strong evidence for the global Paleolithic connection between North America and Northeast Asia.

Researchers crafted replicas of Early Upper Paleolithic stone age tools and used them for various tasks. They found that combining macroscopic and microscopic traces can help identify tool functions, potentially pushing back the timeline for woodworking innovation.

Researchers found that Paleolithic humans intentionally searched for specific types of rocks, like flint, with desirable characteristics for tool-making. They used techniques like the Schmidt Hammer and Rockwell Hardness Device to analyze rock properties.

Researchers developed binary phase-engraved (BiPE) superpixel CFM to overcome limitations of existing technology, enabling high-speed and high-efficiency complex field modulation. BiPE superpixels can utilize all incident light components, increasing optical efficiency.
