We are pleased to announce that The Plant Journal will join Wiley’s Open Access portfolio as of January 1, 2027. From August 2026, all new submissions to the journal will be published open access if accepted.
Authors at hundreds of institutions are eligible to refer the APC charge to one of Wiley’s Read & Publish deals. Society for Experimental Biology members will receive a 10% discount to publish.
The transition to a fully open access journal is part of the Society for Experimental Biology's long-term strategy to support the plant science community. This move reflects the Society’s commitment to removing barriers between research and readers and ensures that the discoveries published in the journal reach the widest possible audience.
This transition empowers authors and readers alike by removing paywalls and making the journal’s high-impact research freely available to a global audience.
Gold open access refers to the immediate and free access to the final published version of an accepted submission.

About The Plant Journal
The aim of The Plant Journal is to publish exciting, high quality science that addresses fundamental questions in plant biology. Typically, the research will provide insight into an as yet unknown mechanism or poorly understood process, will constitute a highly significant contribution to our understanding of plants, and be of general interest to the plant science community. All areas of plant biology are welcome and the experimental approaches used can be wide-ranging and interdisciplinary. Many fully-sequenced genomes and related technologies are now available. The Plant Journal welcomes functional genomics manuscripts when a scientific question, rather than the technology used, has driven the research.
About the Society for Experimental Biology
The Society for Experimental Biology is a learned society that was established in 1923 at Birkbeck College in London to "promote the art and science of experimental biology in all its branches". Today we represent and bring together an international community of experimental biologists to support them in their scientific work, new ideas and experimental techniques, and establish connections between cell, plant, and animal biology as covered by our three sections. One of our key aims is to increase the influence of experimental biology within the scientific community and demonstrate to the wider public its importance and the impact of biological research on tackling real-world issues such as climate change, food security and conservation efforts.
