Cancer patients responded differently to standard drug treatments. MTT chemosensitivity assay was performed to provide predictive information to help physicians choose sensitive chemotherapeutic agents and eliminate potentially ineffective agents from chemotherapeutic regimens for each cancer patient. Dr. Qiang Zhang and his colleagues discovered in their study that the overall 5-year overall survival time was longer in MTT assay sensitive group than in control group.
A research team led by Dr. Qiang Zhang predicted and evaluated the efficacy of MTT assay. The results described in a research article published on May 21, 2008 in the World Journal of Gastroenterology indicate that MTT assay can provide additional clinical data for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer compared with chemosensitivity testing which can only predict which agents should be used. Further study is needed to observe the effect of chemotherapy based on chemosensitivity testing on gastric cancer.
