BP, one of the world's largest energy companies, announced a $135,000 contribution to The University of Oklahoma's K20 Center to support a program aimed at encouraging new students to pursue energy-related degrees.

The K20 Scholars program offers high school graduates from the K20 Center's school network and who are entering OU, scholarships to help them pursue degrees in science, technology, engineering and math. The program provides four-year scholarships and a one-time award for a laptop computer. In addition, K20 Scholars receive additional money to design and implement a service-learning project in the student's local community.

BP's contribution establishes energy scholarships for 20 students pursuing energy-related degrees. The K20 Energy Scholars will participate in energy and alternative-energy-related research; share energy-related projects with K-12 schools across Oklahoma, and hold at least one internship, or research experience with industry and/or academic partner.

Mary John O'Hair, director of the K20 Center, said, "We are thrilled that BP is contributing to this visionary program. BP's support will ensure that the K20 Scholars program continues to grow, giving more Oklahoma students, particularly in rural areas, the opportunity to advance their education, the energy industry and our state."
