Heidelberg, 18 December 2017 - EMBO announces today seven life scientists as recipients of EMBO Installation Grants. These grants will support the early-career researchers in establishing their independent laboratories in the Czech Republic, Estonia, Poland, Portugal and Turkey.

EMBO Installation Grants are awarded on the basis of scientific excellence and international mobility as the primary selection criteria. Recipients must have spent at least two consecutive years outside the country in which they are planning to establish their research group.

EMBO Director Maria Leptin says: "EMBO stands for excellence in the life sciences across Europe. Through the Installation Grants scheme, we encourage young researchers to return or move to countries that find it difficult to compete with large well-funded centers of research in some of the other European countries. We hope to improve the participating countries' competitiveness in European science by helping talented scientists set up laboratories there."

"We are pleased to welcome these seven talented researchers to the EMBO community, and look forward to supporting them during this challenging step in their career in order to establish scientific excellence across the whole continent," Leptin adds.

Installation Grants are awarded annually. They are funded primarily by the Czech Republic, Estonia, Poland, Portugal and Turkey, the participating Member States of the European Molecular Biology Conference (EMBC), EMBO's intergovernmental funding body.

Each Installation Grantee receives 50,000 euros annually for three to five years from their host country to support the establishment of an independent research group. In addition to financial support, the recipients receive networking opportunities and practical support by becoming part of the EMBO Young Investigator network.

The next application deadline for EMBO Installation Grants is 15 April 2018.
