SGIM's highest honor, the Glaser Award recognizes outstanding contributions to research, education or both in generalism in medicine.

This award is supported by grants from the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation and the Commonwealth Fund, as well as many individual contributions.

The award is named in honor of Glaser, a nationally known leader in medical education. He is credited with revitalizing general internal medicine when, in an era of increasing specialization, he established the Kaiser Scholars and Fellowships programs as president of the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Glaser was a founding member of the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences. His career also included top administrative positions at the medical schools of Stanford University, the University of Colorado, and Washington University in St. Louis; service as president of the forerunner of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston; faculty positions at Harvard and Columbia; presidency of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society; and service as trustee and director of medical science for the Lucille P. Markey Charitable Trust.
