The American Chemical Society will co-sponsor a briefing by the National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century on Tuesday, October 10 from 5- 7 p.m. at the Dirksen Senate Office Building, Room SDG-11. The briefing will focus on the national effort to improve the quality of K-12 mathematics and science education in the United States. Panelists will discuss the recently released report, Before It's Too Late, and the Commission's progress on identifying steps to improve math and science education in the United States.
Panelists include Linda P. Rosen, executive director, National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching; Dr. Donald Jones, chair, American Chemical Society Committee on Education; and Rep. Rush Holt (D-NJ).
The report, Before It's Too Late, was released on September 27 and can be accessed through the Internet at www.ed.gov/inits/Math/glenn .
This briefing is sponsored by the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society, in conjunction with other scientific and educational organizations. It is part of a K-12 science, mathematics, engineering and technology education series co-chaired by Reps. Vernon Ehlers (R-MI) and Rush Holt (D-NJ) and Sens. Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) and Jim Jeffords (R-VT). The National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century is also known as the Glenn Commission, named after its chairman, Sen. John Glenn (D-OH).
