Gut-Brain Nexus: The Link Between Gut Microbiota and Neurodegenerative Diseases

Could the microorganisms in our gut hold important clues to brain health?

Growing evidence points to a powerful connection between the gut and the brain. Through the complex, bidirectional gut-brain axis , the gut microbiota can influence metabolism, immunity and brain function, while disturbances in this communication network are increasingly being investigated in relation to neurodegenerative disease.

The Gut-Brain Nexus: The Link Between Gut Microbiota and Neurodegenerative Diseases brings together current scientific evidence and clinical perspectives to explore this emerging field. The book examines how the gut microbiota may influence neurological health and discusses mechanisms through which changes in the microbiome may contribute to disease onset and progression.

The chapters explore the gut microbiota in Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis , as well as irritable bowel syndrome within the broader context of the gut-brain axis. The book also examines potential microbiota-based interventions, including probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, dietary and lifestyle approaches and commercially available products.

By bringing together disease mechanisms, therapeutic strategies, current challenges and future directions, the book provides readers with a focused understanding of the growing scientific interest in microbiome modulation and its potential relevance to neurological health.
