Dana-Farber’s Edward Chouchani, PhD, selected as a 2026 Blavatnik National Award finalist
BOSTON, September 16, 2026 — Edward Chouchani, PhD , principal investigator of the Chouchani Lab at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, was one of 18 scientists named as finalists for the 2026 Blavatnik National Awards for Young Scientists , a significant prize for early-career researchers.
Presented by the Blavatnik Family Foundation and The New York Academy of Sciences , the awards recognize exceptional scientific advances by U.S.-based researchers aged 42 and younger. Each finalist, selected by an independent jury of distinguished scientists in the categories of physical sciences and engineering, life sciences and chemical sciences will receive $15,000 in recognition of their outstanding achievements.
Chouchani, a finalist in life sciences, was recognized for discovering how molecules produced when cells break down nutrients act as signals that control fundamental biological processes, opening new paths to treat cancer and metabolic diseases.
“This recognition is an incredible honor for our lab’s discoveries of new mechanisms by which metabolites regulate biological systems,” said Chouchani, professor of cell biology at Harvard Medical School and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Investigator. “We are excited to build on this work to define the rules of the language by which core metabolites shape life.”
Chouchani’s research is uncovering a previously hidden layer of biological communication by revealing how metabolites—the small molecules produced when cells convert food into energy and the building blocks required for growth—regulate cellular function. Through pioneering mass spectrometry and chemical biology technologies, Chouchani has shown how metabolites control energy balance, inflammation and cell division. These discoveries are creating new opportunities to develop medicines for obesity, cancer, metabolic disease and other human health challenges.
Chouchani has previously received numerous awards and research grants to support his academic laboratory, including the Mark Foundation Emerging Leader Award to transform the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

The 2026 Blavatnik National Awards received 372 nominations from 187 academic and research institutions in 43 states and the District of Columbia. Three laureates will be announced at a ceremony also celebrating the 18 finalists on October 6 at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.
