Using germ-free mice colonized with normal microbiota, researchers demonstrate a link between gut microbiota and maturation of the adult enteric nervous system (ENS), which is involved in gastrointestinal functions; the authors report microbiota-induced release of serotonin and subsequent neuronal activation of serotonin receptors in the ENS, findings with potential implications for treating gastrointestinal disorders.
