Timothy DelSole, Professor, Atmospheric, Oceanic and Earth Sciences, and Michael K. Tippett, Associate Professor of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics at Columbia University, are working to improve climate predictions by advancing the understanding of processes that influence the ocean and atmosphere on decadal time scales.

Their approach is to quantify the consistency between climate models and observations through a novel application of a multivariate statistical framework, whose utility has been demonstrated in other fields (economics, statistics, etc.).

The climate models they will analyze are state-of-the-art (CMIP5/CMIP6).

This research will improve researchers' current understanding of climate variability and predictability by identifying models whose statistical causal relations are consistent with observations.

DelSole received $157,501 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for this work. Funding began in September 2020 and will end in late August 2023.
