NEW YORK – September 22, 2026 – The Blavatnik Family Foundation and The New York Academy of Sciences today announced the nine recipients of the 2026 Blavatnik Regional Awards for Young Scientists, recognizing three Laureates and six Finalists whose postdoctoral research exemplifies the extraordinary scientific excellence found across the Tri-State area of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
The Blavatnik Regional Awards honor outstanding postdoctoral researchers in Chemical Sciences, Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences & Engineering. A distinguished jury of scientists and engineers selected one Laureate per category, each receiving a $30,000 unrestricted award, along with two Finalists per category, each receiving $10,000 in unrestricted funds.
Chosen from 176 nominations representing 35 academic and research institutions, this year's honorees are advancing discoveries that deepen scientific understanding and open new pathways for innovation.
The announcement coincides with the National Postdoctoral Association ’s 17 th annual celebration of National Postdoc Appreciation Week , which recognizes the significant contributions that postdoctoral scholars make to scientific research and discovery .
The 2026 Blavatnik Regional Awards Laureates and Finalists will be honored on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at the annual Blavatnik Awards Ceremony held at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Richard Lifton, MD, PhD, President of The Rockefeller University, will serve as the Presenter of Ceremonies for the evening.
The 2026 Blavatnik Regional Awards Laureates are:
Chemical Sciences : Trevor van Eeuwen , PhD, nominated by The Rockefeller University
Recognized for using advanced imaging techniques and cell studies to uncover how hidden DNA elements copy themselves, trigger immune responses, and reveal clues to autoimmune disease and cancer.
Life Sciences: Barbara Bosch , MD, PhD, nominated by The Rockefeller University
Recognized for advancing mechanism-guided drug discovery for priority pathogens, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis, by developing high-throughput methods to identify and screen novel bacterial inhibitors.
Physical Sciences & Engineering : Natalie Fardian-Melamed , PhD, nominated by Columbia University
Recognized for discovering and engineering ultra-sensitive, light-based nanosensors that remotely detect a broad range of mechanical forces, laying the groundwork for breakthroughs in biomedicine, robotics, and next-generation quantum technologies.

Andreas Mueller , Dr. sc. ETH Zurich, nominated by The Rockefeller University
Recognized for using cryo-electron microscopy to reveal, step by step, how bacteria start gene transcription and how enzymes build essential RNA molecules in pathogens and cells.
Zhihao Cui , PhD, nominated by Columbia University
Recognized for developing computational theories that model how electrons interact with vibrations and light, advancing the prediction and design of superconductors and quantum materials with unusual properties.
LIFE SCIENCES
Seungjae Lee , PhD , nominated by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
Recognized for identifying a novel mechanism of RNA regulation mediated by metabolic proteins with implications for improving therapeutics that work by silencing RNA of disease-causing genes.
Matthew Zipple , PhD, nominated by Cornell University
Recognized for challenging traditional laboratory paradigms by “rewilding” lab mice to demonstrate how molecular aging, complex emotions, and physiology are all influenced by naturalistic environments and social dynamics.
PHYSICAL SCIENCES & ENGINEERING
Adrian Bayer , PhD, nominated by the Flatiron Institute
Recognized for pioneering cosmological simulations and interpretable machine learning methods that reveal hidden information about the Universe’s structure and
evolution.
Itai Linial , PhD, nominated by Columbia University
Recognized for uncovering the origin of recurring X-ray eruptions around supermassive black holes, transforming how astronomers' study extreme galactic environments.
Internationally recognized by the scientific community, the Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists have played a vital role in recognizing outstanding early-career scientists and providing the support needed to accelerate scientific discovery and innovation. By the close of 2026, the Blavatnik Awards will have awarded more than $20 million to over 500 scientists at 120 research institutions worldwide.
