Bottom Line: The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends screening for gestational diabetes in asymptomatic pregnant individuals at 24 weeks or later and concludes that current evidence is insufficient to make a recommendation about screening before then. Gestational diabetes, which is diabetes that develops during pregnancy, increases the risk for maternal and fetal complications, including preeclampsia. The USPSTF routinely makes recommendations about the effectiveness of preventive care services and this statement is consistent with its 2014 recommendation.
