Jie Xu, Associate Professor, Systems Engineering and Operations Research, is working on a project via which he aims to develop a flexible simulation-based outer-loop application tool for the analysis, evaluation, and optimization to support building a resilient power grid.
The tool consists of three pillars: a scalable parallel simulation-based optimization (SO) solver to optimize large-scale power grid planning/operations; adaptive computing budget allocation methods to optimize computational efficiency; and scientific machine learning methods to provide fast predictive capabilities and recommend planning/operational rules in response to disturbances to the power grid.
The proposed work builds upon promising preliminary work conducted by the project team on optimal power line hardening via the simulation-based optimization with an objective to improve weather resilience.
Xu received $21,504 from the U.S. Department of Energy for this project. Funding began in November 2020 and will end in late October 2021.
