Patients with refractory asthma experienced longer term improvement in pulmonary function, improved quality of life, and reduced rescue medication use after undergoing bronchial thermoplasty. The procedure resulted in a significant reduction in corticosteroid use, particularly among those who were able to wean off medication completely.
A new study published at the American Thoracic Society Meeting found that bronchial thermoplasty improved pulmonary function, asthma control, and quality of life in severe asthma patients. After one year, 50% of patients were able to completely wean off oral corticosteroids, with significant improvements in medication use.
The company has completed enrollment in its pivotal FDA-approved IDE study, the Asthma Intervention Research 2 (AIR2) Trial, which aims to establish the safety and efficacy of the Alair Bronchial Thermoplasty System. The trial has nearly 300 patients enrolled at over 30 medical centers worldwide.
