National award honors Djire’s excellence in research and teaching

Dr. Abdoulaye Djire received the prestigious Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award, a national recognition that honors exceptional faculty who excel in both groundbreaking research and undergraduate teaching in the chemical sciences.

Only 17 early-career faculty members are selected each year for this honor, which carries an unrestricted funding amount of $100,000 over five years. This allows Djire the flexibility to be more creative in both research and teaching.

“I am deeply honored and grateful for this recognition,” he said. “It affirms the value of my efforts and inspires me to continue embracing new challenges and opportunities to contribute meaningfully to my discipline and to the development of future scientists. I am grateful that my commitment to excellence in both research and teaching has been acknowledged.”

Djire’s work focuses on broadening the impact of nitride MXenes, or MNenes, and operando Spectro electrochemistry. He aims to establish new design principles for electrochemical synthesis and separations, with implications for sustainable chemical manufacturing and energy storage.

The Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award provides an opportunity to enhance the educational experience. The support will enable Djire to develop innovative and customized learning tools.

Djire’s teaching philosophy is centered on active learning and student engagement. He believes students learn best when they are actively involved in the learning process rather than passively receiving information.

This is shown in his classroom by encouraging discussion, problem-solving and collaborative learning to help students develop both technical knowledge and critical-thinking skills.

Djire’s overall goal is to create an environment where students feel supported, challenged and empowered to reach their full potential.

“The greatest measure of success for me is the success of my students,” Djire said. “I have been fortunate to mentor outstanding undergraduate and graduate students who have gone on to achieve remarkable accomplishments, securing roles in leading industries and national laboratories.”

As Djire prepares the next generation of engineers and scientists, he believes it is essential that we continue to strengthen STEM education and encourage more students to pursue careers in these fields, while still addressing emerging societal and industrial challenges.

“I believe the future of education lies in integrating foundational scientific principles with real-world applications, hands-on experiences and interdisciplinary problem-solving,” Djire said. “By aligning education with the needs of industry and society, we can better prepare students to become innovative leaders and contributors to society.”
