The premier, peer-reviewed journal is indexed in PubMed, PubMed Central, Scopus, DOAJ, Sherpa/Romeo, and EBSCO/EBSCO Essentials.
This section focuses on meaningfully integrating sex and gender variables into the foundational and applied aspects of biomedical engineering. By moving beyond presumed gender neutrality, which often overlooks essential biological differences, this collection explores how recognizing sex as a biological variable and gender as a sociocultural construct can lead to more precise computational models and safer medical technologies. This section aims to foster a more equitable and effective biomedical engineering field, where technologies and practices are designed to meet the needs of all populations.
Submissions should address the intersection of engineering and sex/gender-informed science.

Research on identifying and mitigating bias in biomedical algorithms, emphasizing the need for datasets that account for sex-specific physiological parameters
Investigations into the disparities caused by sex and gender gaps in technology development, and evaluating the consequences of those disparities
Approaches for promoting inclusive research practices
Development of digital twins or models that include sex-specific biological differences
Validation studies of biomedical models, devices, or applications that examine whether performance, safety, or accuracy differs across groups
Research on wearable sensors and digital health tools, especially how body morphology, physiology, or user experience may affect data quality and usability
