On July 8, Korea University College of Medicine held the 1st Yale-Korea University Urology Symposium at Yukwangsa Hall on the second floor of the College of Medicine's main building.
Since 2024, Korea University College of Medicine and Yale School of Medicine have expanded education and research collaboration efforts. This symposium was held to establish regular academic exchanges and strengthen the foundation for collaborative research between the two universities in urology.
The symposium featured various sessions covering all fields of urology and medical education, including AI-based prostate cancer diagnosis; single-port and multi-port robotic surgery; bladder cancer treatment strategies in the era of immuno-oncology (EV + pembrolizumab); male health and functional hypogonadism; functional and reconstructive urology: urinary incontinence after prostatectomy; benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and minimally invasive surgery (MIST); the latest surgical treatments for kidney and urinary stones; and a comparison of resident training systems between Korea and the U.S. Furthermore, each session also featured panel discussions on the future of urology and opportunities to expand global collaborative research.
In particular, Dr. Isaac Yi Kim, Chair of the Department of Urology at Yale School of Medicine, explained the evolution of the U.S. healthcare system and analyzed the structural challenges facing the U.S. healthcare system. He also discussed potential directions for future healthcare reform in the United States through comparisons with the universal health insurance systems of Germany, Japan, and Switzerland.
Along with the event, Korea University's Anam Hospital and Yale New Haven Hospital signed an MOU to strengthen cooperation and agreed to expand their academic exchanges from urology to broader medical and biomedical fields. The two institutions plan to establish a comprehensive framework for collaboration in education, research, and clinical practice by promoting faculty exchange, clinical observation, and professional training, as well as hosting joint training programs and seminars, sharing clinical and academic information, and conducting joint research.
Dr. Kang Seok-ho, Chief of the Department of Urology at Anam Hospital, said, "This symposium is meaningful as it is the first collaborative urology symposium based on the cooperation and trust built over many years between Korea University and Yale. I hope this event can become not merely an academic exchange, but an opportunity for the two institutions to deepen their collaboration."
Dr. Pyun Sung-bom, Dean of Korea University College of Medicine, said, "Our College of Medicine has maintained active faculty and student exchanges with Yale School of Medicine in various fields, including medical informatics, neuroscience, oncology, hematology, obstetrics and gynecology, hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery, cardiology, and urology. I hope we can further expand our cooperation through regular academic exchanges, including the Infectious Diseases and Immunology Forum and the Urology Symposium. This will serve as a solid foundation for fostering the next generation of researchers and physician-scientists who will lead the future of medical science."
