Bethesda, MD (July 1, 2026) — The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) today announced the launch of AGA APP GI Readiness and Credentialing , a new professional development initiative designed to support advanced practice providers (APPs) throughout their careers in gastroenterology and hepatology.
The initiative introduces structured professional pathways for APPs, supporting development from early specialty training through advanced clinical recognition.
"The demand for highly skilled advanced practice providers continues to grow as they play an increasingly important role in delivering gastroenterology and hepatology care," said HoChong Gilles, DNP, FNP-BC, AF-AASLD, co-chair of AGA’s nurse practitioners/physician assistants task force. "AGA APP GI Readiness and Credentialing provides a structured pathway for professional growth while establishing meaningful standards that support APPs, employers, and ultimately patient care."
The initiative includes two pathways:
AGA APP Foundations Certificate (coming soon) — a certificate program designed for APPs who are new to the specialty. The program supports development and onboarding, building confidence, foundational knowledge, and readiness for practice.
AGA GI Advanced Practice Certification (APP GI-C) (now open to applicants) — a certification program for experienced APPs, typically those with approximately three or more years of practice in gastroenterology and hepatology. The program validates advanced clinical knowledge and competency through a formal assessment. Successful candidates earn the APP GI-C credential, which recognizes advanced expertise and signaling mastery in gastroenterology and hepatology practice.
Together, these pathways create a structured professional development journey that supports APPs from specialty onboarding through advanced clinical recognition.
APP GI Advanced Practice Certification now accepting applications
As the first pathway to launch under AGA APP GI Readiness and Credentialing, the APP GI-C is now accepting applications . The credential provides employers with a trusted benchmark for advanced expertise while supporting career advancement for experienced APPs and reinforcing consistent, high-quality patient care through validated competency.
AGA will share additional updates following completion of the inaugural testing period, including announcing the first APP GI-C certificants, and provide updates on the continued development of the APP Foundations Certificate.
