Professor Tony James from the University of Bath’s Department of Chemistry and Institute of Sustainability and Climate Change , has been named Honorary Fellow of the Chinese Chemical Society (2025), awarded to outstanding, internationally renowned scientists who have contributed to the exchange between the Chinese Chemical Society and international scientists.

To date, 114 world-leading scientists have been awarded honorary members of the Chinese Chemical Society, with only a handful of these coming from the UK.

Professor James is a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, European Academy of Sciences and is an internationally renowned expert in supramolecular chemistry and chemical sensing.

The Honorary Fellowship recognises his significant contributions in fluorescence chemical sensing, molecular identification, and diagnostic chemistry, especially in the design of molecular systems related to glucose fluorescence sensing and continuous glucose monitoring, with broad international influence.

He has maintained long-term cooperative relationships with many Chinese universities and research institutions, conducting joint research and cultivating talent in molecular sensing, fluorescence imaging, and diagnostic and therapeutic fields.

He also actively participates in international academic exchanges and collaborations, making positive contributions to the development of China's supramolecular chemistry and chemical sensing fields, and enhancing the international influence of related fields.

Professor James said: “I’m humbled and honoured to be elected as an Honorary Fellow of the Chinese Chemical Society. This recognition is a testament to the dedication, creativity, and hard work of all the incredible PhD students, postdocs, and colleagues I have had the privilege of working with over the years.

“Science is entirely a collaborative journey, and this honour belongs to our entire research community. I’m deeply grateful to everyone who has been part of this path, and am looking forward to the work ahead!”
