AI is being integrated into our daily lives and reshaping our world at speed, often far outpacing consideration of the ethical issues it raises. A new book series from CRC Press and the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) has been developed to provide a nuanced understanding of the ethical concerns and implications of current and emerging AI technology.

The AAAI/CRC Press Advances in AI Ethics series will bring together leading researchers and practitioners from around the world to explore the ethical concerns surrounding AI and offer actionable guidance on using it safely and responsibly.

“The ethical questions about whether and how AI should be used in different situations are arguably more important than the technological challenges to be overcome,” said Lucy McClune, Senior Commissioning Editor, Computer Science at CRC Press. “This series aims to address those crucial questions, providing an essential resource for researchers, students, policymakers, technologists, and anyone committed to ensuring AI serves a fair, just, and equitable society.”

The series is edited by Francesca Rossi (IBM Fellow and AI Ethics Global Leader, USA) and Virginia Dignum (Umeå University, Sweden), with the support of the AAAI. As the premier scientific society in AI, AAAI's deep engagement with the field ensures the series will deliver cutting-edge insights of current challenges and a clear roadmap for navigating the future of AI ethics.

Francesca Rossi highlights that: “AI ethics does not lack books, but the field can look fragmented, with many different assumptions about what the issues are and what it means to address them. This series reflects a view that Virginia and I share: that these questions are empirical and evidence-based, inseparable from governance, and best approached constructively. It is also a view that fits AAAI's commitment to treating AI questions scientifically. A series makes it possible to carry that perspective consistently across volumes.”

The first book in the series, Ethical AI and Education: Reality, Opportunities, Governance, and Consequences of AI in the Classroom , will be published later this month. Written by Clara Hawking and Darren Coxon, it examines the realities of AI in educational settings, covering key ethical considerations for educators today, from governance frameworks and accountability structures to practical classroom applications. It addresses critical issues including bias, data privacy, academic integrity, and teacher agency, while offering concrete strategies for building human-centered classrooms in an increasingly AI world.

CRC Press and AAAI have also announced that the series’ second book, The End of Reality: Humans in the Age of ChatGPT, Deepfakes, and Artificial Intelligence by Mateusz Łabuz, will be published in December 2026.
