MINNEAPOLIS — The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) has named a new editor-in-chief of Continuum: Lifelong Learning in Neurology ® , its official continuing medical education (CME) journal. A. Gordon Smith, MD, FAAN, will succeed Continuum ® Editor-in-Chief Lyell K. Jones, Jr, MD, FAAN, on May 1, 2027, when Jones departs from the position to serve as the next president of the American Academy of Neurology.

Smith, who is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, will be the fifth editor-in-chief of Continuum since the journal was launched in 1993.

“There has never been a more exciting time in neurology, with remarkable discoveries and new therapies becoming available at an accelerating pace,” said Smith. “As the incoming editor-in-chief, I look forward to ensuring that Continuum continues its tradition of educational innovation to be an essential resource for the entire neurology care community in serving all patients with brain disease.”

Continuum is a bimonthly, topic-based, clinically oriented review journal for the practicing neurologist, residents and fellows, advanced practice providers and neurology professionals. It is written by authors who are experts in their fields with each bimonthly issue containing knowledge around a single topic area in neurology. Continuum also includes Continuum ® Audio, a companion podcast featuring conversations with Continuum guest editors and authors that supplement each journal article, and Continuum ® Aloud, verbatim, audiobook-style recordings of Continuum articles.

Smith is the Kenneth and Dianne Wright Distinguished Chair and Professor of Neurology at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, Virginia, and former chair of the Department of Neurology at VCU.

Smith has served on the Continuum Editorial Board since 2015, and as a Continuum Audio interviewer since 2023. He has also served on the AAN Institute Board of Directors in his role as chair of the AAN Education Committee.

Following Smith’s graduation from the University of Virginia and Mayo Medical School, he completed a neurology residency and neuromuscular medicine fellowship at the University of Michigan. He is an internationally recognized expert in neuromuscular medicine with a focus on disorders of the peripheral nervous system. He has led and participated in numerous research studies and clinical trials addressing peripheral neuropathy due to diabetes, obesity, and chemotherapy exposure.
