Scientist proposes new theory of aging

A new theory on aging, proposed by Ronald D. Lee, suggests that natural selection favors animals capable of devoting energy to insure survival of the next generation. This theory attempts to fill in gaps of previous ideas on aging and its relationship with nurturing behavior.

'Prehabilitation' prevents functional decline of at-risk frail elders living at home

A study published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that a prehabilitation program improved balance, muscle strength, and mobility in physically frail elderly individuals. The program, which included physical therapy and resistance band exercises, significantly reduced disability scores compared to a health education group.

Low dose estrogen improves bone health

A low dose of estrogen was as effective as a higher dose in reducing bone turnover and preventing osteoporosis in older women. The study found that women taking 0.25 mg estradiol had no more side effects than those taking a placebo, improving bone health with fewer risks.

Odor test may help doctors more accurately predict Alzheimer's disease

Researchers found that 19 out of 47 people with mild cognitive impairment who had difficulty identifying smells went on to develop Alzheimer's disease. The study suggests that the inability to recognize smells, combined with a lack of awareness about impaired olfactory senses, may be used as a predictor of impending Alzheimer's disease.
