“Wearable” devices for cells

MIT researchers have developed battery-free wearable devices that can snugly wrap around neurons, allowing for precise control over electrical and metabolic activity. The devices, made of a soft polymer, can be wirelessly actuated with light to measure or modulate a neuron's activity at a subcellular level.

Atoms on the edge

Researchers at MIT have directly observed edge states in a cloud of ultracold atoms, capturing images of atoms flowing along a boundary without resistance. This discovery could enable super-efficient energy transmission and data transfer in materials.

Study: Flying keeps getting safer

A new MIT study analyzes airline safety trends over the past few decades and finds that commercial flight has become roughly twice as safe each decade since the 1960s. The study estimates that passengers are about 39 times safer than they were in the 1968-1977 period, with a 1 in 13.7 million risk of fatality per boarding.
